Stockfish 18: What's New in the World's Strongest Chess Engine
Stockfish 18, released January 2026, is the strongest chess engine ever. Learn what's new, how NNUE evaluation works, and why it powers Chess Calculator.
Stockfish 18, released in January 2026, is the latest version of the world's strongest open-source chess engine. Rated over 3500 ELO, it is more than 600 points stronger than the best human player in history.
What Makes Stockfish So Strong?
Stockfish combines two approaches: traditional alpha-beta search (exploring millions of positions per second) and NNUE neural network evaluation (understanding positions at a deep level). This hybrid approach is more effective than either method alone.
NNUE: The Neural Network
NNUE (Efficiently Updatable Neural Network) is a lightweight neural network that evaluates chess positions. Unlike larger neural networks, NNUE can be updated incrementally when a move is made, making it extremely fast.
Stockfish vs Other Engines
Stockfish consistently wins the Top Chess Engine Championship (TCEC) and Computer Chess Championship (CCC). Its main rival is Leela Chess Zero (Lc0), a pure neural network engine inspired by AlphaZero. While Lc0 excels in certain position types, Stockfish's hybrid approach gives it an edge in overall play. Komodo Dragon is another strong contender but typically rates 100-150 ELO below Stockfish.
Stockfish in Your Browser
Chess Calculator runs Stockfish 18 directly in your browser via WebAssembly (WASM). WebAssembly compiles the C++ source code into a binary format that runs at near-native speed in Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge. No server calls, no downloads — the engine runs entirely on your device.
The trade-off is speed: browser-based WASM runs about 5-10x slower than a native desktop build. That's why our Desktop App analyzes positions in under 1 second, while the web version takes 5-10 seconds. For casual analysis and learning, the web version is more than sufficient. For serious preparation, the desktop app is the way to go.
