Finding the best move in chess is both an art and a science. While grandmasters rely on years of pattern recognition, tools like Stockfish 18 can analyze millions of positions per second to find the objectively strongest move.

The 3-Step Process

1. Assess the position. Before calculating, understand what's happening. Who has the initiative? Are there tactical threats? What are the pawn structures telling you?

2. Generate candidate moves. Don't calculate the first move you see. List 3-5 candidate moves, including checks, captures, and threats. This prevents tunnel vision.

3. Calculate and evaluate. For each candidate, calculate the key variations. Use the Chess Calculator to verify your analysis and understand where your thinking went wrong.

Using the Chess Calculator

Set up any position on the board, paste a FEN string, or upload a screenshot. Click Hint to see the engine's top move with an evaluation score. The AI Coach explains why the move is best — not just what to play, but the reasoning behind it.

Common Mistakes

The biggest mistake is playing too quickly without considering all candidate moves. Another common error is ignoring your opponent's threats. Always ask: "What does my opponent want to do?"
